Between 1880 and 1920, it will become the largest addiction treatment center in the country. Heavily reliant on the trope of "exotic Oriental" landscapes as "the place where addiction originates," Keeley creates a myth of Middle Easterners and East Asians as the instigators of addiction, claiming that: "opium dreaming has no affinity for the life which palpitates in this new world of ours." The center makes millions between 1892-1900 after franchising the institute.
