An attempt to solidify Indigenous land-holding in Hawai'i, the Great Mahele also opens up the path to private ownership for non-Indigenous Hawai'ians as they buy, steal, and manipulate land away from local people. This period expands the number of non-Hawai'ians taking land and building sugar plantations.
