As the sugar economy in the Caribbean crashes, plantations begin to shift to tobacco production. Unlike sugar, tobacco can be grown along with other crops, including in situations with subsistence agriculture. This makes it possible for poorer farmers to plant tobacco alongside their food crops and grow it for both personal use and export.
