In the late 1970s, 83.7% of people with developmental disability labels who are receiving residential care live in facilities with 16 or more people.

The movement to close larger institutions will accelerate over the coming decades. By 2009, an estimated 86.4% will live in residential settings of 15 or fewer people, and 73.1% will live with 6 or fewer people.
