Mark Catesby publishes The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, recording Indigenous plant knowledge while also criticizing Native people for being ‘‘wholly ignorant in Anatomy and Phlebotomy.’’ It does not occur to him to ask questions or seek to understand local belief systems regarding the body, illness, and balance, but rather assumes the people he encountered have none.
