The author, Hugh Hampton Young, is a doctor and the head of genitourinary surgery at Johns Hopkins. The book regards intersex people through a pathologizing and dehumanizing lens. The text is an early blueprint for forced genital reconstruction surgeries on intersex people.

While this work is seen as a "breakthrough" and opens the field of genitourinary anatomical research on intersex people, it is no longer widely accepted or recommended to perform surgery on intersex people's genitalia at birth.
