The second edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of "Mental Disorders" (DSM-II) defines autism as a psychiatric condition and "a form of childhood schizophrenia marked by a detachment from reality."

It is understood by the medical establishment at this time as stemming from "cold and unemotional mothers" (Zeldovich, 2018).
