In 1956, the first large-scale human trial of the birth control pill is carried out in Puerto Rico. Puerto Rican women who take part are not told that they are participating in an experimental clinical trial.

The initial hormone levels in the pills are much higher than what is healthy, which causes significant health problems for the women who participate.
