Boston Consumptives Hospital opens for Black and poor patients with tuberculosis.
Date: 1906
Up until this point, most of the sanatoriums that have opened are a mix between luxury spas and health facilities seeking to discover or invent new therapies. As a result, the founders of the Boston hospital are critical of these sanatoriums for not addressing the social problems that lead to tuberculosis and ignoring populations that they (the founders) describe as the "homeless, friendless, dependent, dissipated, and vicious."
