Date: 1810

ICM
MED

The term is coined by Samuel Hahnemann, the German founder of homeopathy, to define "the usual practice of medicine" in comparison with homeopathy. "Allopathic" refers to treatment with agents that oppose symptoms. It will come to mean "disease-based" as opposed to "whole systems-based." "Alternative medicine" practitioners will come to refer to it as "Western medicine."
