With the Timber Culture Act, Congress grants an additional 160 acres of land to homesteaders if they agree to plant trees on one fourth of the land. The primary intention is to grow more trees for access to lumber in the prairie. The proponents of the act also believe that more trees will increase rainfall and create better conditions for farming.
