Continued sterilization of Native women.

Date: 1970

INDG
STER
POV

About 25% of Native women living on reservations are sterilized in this era. Monies from the Family Planning Services and the Population Research Act are allocated to perform "voluntary sterilizations," but many hospitals operate on women who are unaware of the procedures they are undergoing.

In 1975 alone, 25,000 women will be sterilized by the Indian Health Services (IHS). The U.S. Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) department funds 90 percent of the annual sterilization costs for all people living in poverty.
