The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) releases a report with testimonials presented to the U.S. House Subcommittee on Criminal Justice on LGBTQ+ hate violence. The report shows LGBTQ+ people are the most frequent targets of hate crimes in the U.S. The testimonials were gathered by numerous LGBTQ+ and anti-violence organizations, as well as from police agencies.

The DOJ's report recommends strategies for intervention, paving the road for controversial "hate crime" legislation. This also leads to a split within LGBTQ+ movements based on differing views around carceral strategies to end violence.
