African-American men are largely prevented from serving in the military, outside of segregated units. Their participation in the military is determined by blood quota and the "one-drop" rule, separating African-American soldiers from white soldiers. Meanwhile, African-American soldiers in Southern states are still subject to Jim Crow laws.
