Seventy-one adults and 34 children die after taking a drug called Elixir Sulfanilamide, which is used to treat a variety of ailments from gonorrhea to a sore throat. This tragedy will lead to the passage of the 1938 Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act, giving the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) power to monitor the safety of new drugs.
