By the time legal chattel slavery ends, it is documented that approximately 58% (but we will never know the true numbers) of all enslaved Black women have experienced some form of abhorrent sexual abuse and violence by slaveholders and other white men. This was legitimized by a culture of white supremacy and the exploitation of slavery. While the percentages are fewer, and the numbers less actively tracked, sexual violence as a domination strategy was also directed at enslaved Black men.
