In particular, the U.S. military encounters cholera spreading from Canada when fighting Sauk leader, Blackhawk, over land in Illinois. Cholera spreads into Illinois through the canal system that links into Canada. Soldiers are infected and then spread it to nearby citizens. This starts with army deserters who spread cholera to nearby farms where they are hiding out.
