Eleven physicians meet in Washington, D.C. to establish the first compendium of standard drugs, called the U.S. Pharmacopeia. Their intention is to quell "the Evil of irregularity and uncertainty in the preparation of medicines." This is the beginning of the process of standardization that will eventually lead to the U.S. federal government's system of FDA drug approval, establishing a foundation for profit in the pharmaceutical market.
