First national survey of nursing homes conducted, revealing proliferation of for-profit facilities.
Date: 1954
The survey reveals that private nursing homes have proliferated across the U.S. since the creation of Old Age Assistance under the Social Security Act (SSA) in 1935. Because the SSA prohibited the use of funds for residents of public institutions (in the attempt to end poorhouses), 86% of the 9,000 nursing homes identified in the first survey are private, for-profit facilities.
