In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a medical procedure for when an egg and sperm are fertilized outside of the body to conceive an embryo.

The Monash IVF team in Melbourne, Australia reports the first successful IVF pregnancy in 1973. The pregnancy ultimately results in a miscarriage, but becomes a critical next step in expanding assisted reproductive technologies (ART).
