The evaluations begin as an attempt to screen out those likely to experience "shell shock." Close to two million soldiers are tested for "psychological fitness" and "intelligence," with about 2% being declared "unfit for service." This is a genesis moment in the use of psychological testing in assessing whether a person can join the military and what role(s) they will play once enlisted.
