Growth of "quackery" medicine across Western Europe.
Date: 1600s
The term "quackery" comes from a Dutch word, and means: "remedies that are suspect or of dubious origin." As Western science begins to emerge, the concept of "quackery" will be placed on all remedies and responses that do not fit into the growing medical canon, which is defined by the upper classes. "Quacks" are negatively defined as: "unregulated physicians, usually 'poor' people who cannot afford a medical education." They are people who sell their goods on street corners and at markets, calling out information about their products. The word "quack" in both Dutch and English refers to the noises they make, supposedly like a bunch of quacking ducks or geese. "Quacks" typically targeted those that were vulnerable and marginalized within their communities.
