Workers gather in Haymarket Square to peacefully protest police actions at a workers’ strike the day before.

After a labor strike in Chicago results in police killing one protestor and injuring several others, a rally is planned at Haymarket Square to protest police brutality. Police enter the peaceful crowd to force them to disperse, and a pipe bomb is thrown into the police ranks. The uprising results in a wave of xenophobia, with police detaining many European immigrants suspected of being anarchists and communists.
