Ford implements the first closed system hospital practice, meaning that hospital employees are required to hold no other jobs. He personally selects the physicians, and also instigates a research component at the hospital, as well as a teaching practice. This marks a movement of hospitals from primarily being places of care to being sites of scientific research and development.
