One of the requirements in the use of Medicare and Medicaid is that federal funds will be withheld from any hospital that practices racial discrimination, as required by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.

This will lead to the desegregation of many hospitals, but will have limited success in desegregating nursing homes and other care facilities, where the only requirement is that signs that denounce discriminatory practices be posted.
