In this historic moment, Igbo and other West African enslaved people take control of the ship where they have been held, and drown the crew. They come ashore singing, and then march en masse into the waters of Dunbar Creek in Georgia. Many of the West Africans drown, but others are not recorded to have perished and are assumed to have escaped.
