Import Drugs Act of 1848.

Date: 1848

DRUG
PHA
LLP

After weak and adulterated drugs are found to be present in the U.S. drug supply, this act requires imported drugs to meet standards set forward in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) regarding their strength and purity. The act will not be well enforced, but sets a precedent for: 1) the USP to become a formal national compendium, and 2) future federal laws.
