The terms "intersex'" (for the individual) and "intersexuality" (for the identity) are coined by Ashkenazi Jewish zoologist, geneticist, and endocrinologist Richard Goldschmidt, who was born in Germany and will later move to the U.S. in order to escape the Nazis.

He identifies the existence of intersexuality in animals after studying the genetic traits and sexual characteristics of gypsy moths.
