This begins the First Anglo-Powhatan War, where colonists fight Powhatan people for both land and food, using violence to end two seasons of starvation for the colonists. The English capture Pocahontas and use her to attempt to leverage control over the local people. While this war is not always recognized in U.S. military histories, many Native people name it as the first colonizer-Native war.
