Krao Farini is captured from Laos and exhibited in the West as "Darwin's Missing Link."
Date: 1880
Farini is captured by anthropologists during an expedition to Laos. Farini has significant facial hair (hypertrichosis), leading to the anthropologists describing her as part of a tribe, which they call the "Kraos-monink," who they believe are covered in hair and live in trees.
Farini is exhibited as an example of a state "between" human and animal and as proof of Darwin's theory of evolution. She will die in 1926, and will be cremated as per her request that this be done so that no one will stare at her once she has died.
