Lassa fever is reclassified as being in the "highest risk" category for usage in bioterrorism.
Date: 2001
Although Lassa fever has been endemic to the Mano River Region for decades, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) reclassify the disease as having a high potential to be used as a bioterror threat following the September 11th attacks and anthrax incidents.
As a result, millions of dollars will be poured into Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea for research and defense purposes.
