Muir was unaware of her forced sterilization, which occurred in her adolescence, until she later married and discovered she was unable to bear children.

She becomes the first of hundreds of eugenics survivors to sue the Canadian government for wrongful confinement, physical and sexual abuse, forced labor, wrongful sterilization, and other forms of mistreatment in institutions for people with disabilities.
