Lysol begins to market itself as a vaginal douche.
Date: 1900s
In advertisements, Lysol is marketed as good for "odors." "Guarding against odors" is already code for contraception, where vaginal douching has been promoted as a form of contraception using this language for years. By 1940, Lysol will be the most popular douche product, even though doctors will have already reported 193 poisonings and five deaths from Lysol douching by 1911. Women will routinely complain of vaginal burning and blisters. However, their lawsuits will be largely overturned and their reports will be covered up.
