Matthew Shepard, a gay white student at the University of Wyoming, is beaten and left to die near Laramie, Wyoming. This tragedy galvanized the national movement towards recognizing and ending violence against LGBTQ+ people, and eventually leads to the passage of additional federal hate crime legislation.
