At the University of Southern California Los Angeles County Medical Center, women are: "coerced into signing permission slips during labor after doctors had threatened to withhold pain medication unless they agreed to be sterilized" (Gutiérrez, 2004) during the birth.

Many others are never asked for consent, or are lied to by doctors who tell them that after three Cesarean sections it is state law that they need to be sterilized.
