One of the first federally-funded telemedicine experiments takes place in a Native community.
Date: 1970
The experiment takes place at the Tohono O'odham Nation (formerly known as the Papago) in Arizona, and is a partnership between the U.S. Indian Health Service (IHS), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Lockheed Corporation. It is focused on evaluating the practicality of a large-scale telemedicine project as a way of building rural healthcare systems.
