Southern records and newspaper articles reflect that Black people are rarely observed to be "opium eaters." Records show that, unlike white soldiers, Black soldiers are not given opiates to deal with battle wounds and pain. This racist assumption about Black people having a higher tolerance for pain also prevents opiate addiction from occurring amongst Black soldiers until later.
