Pervasive mass incarceration continues, as does the so-called War on Drugs.
Date: 2019
One in five people in jail are incarcerated for a drug offense, and 450,000 people are incarcerated for nonviolent drug offenses, such as possession of marijuana or heroin. Of these, nine times as many Black people as white people go to federal prison for crack offenses. Furthermore, federal courts issue Black people sentences for crack that are almost double those of white people's crack sentences during this period: 148 months compared to 84 months.
