The U.S. Supreme Court upholds legal segregation through their landmark "separate but equal" ruling. The case originated in 1892 when Homer Plessy, an African-American man, refused to sit in a train car designated for Black passengers. After arguing that his constitutional rights were violated, Plessy's case is defeated in 1896 when the Supreme Court votes in favor of continued racial segregation.
