Puerto Rican women lead protests against the deadly contamination caused by the U.S. Navy in Vieques. The protests begin in 1970, and will eventually lead to the closure of the base.

In 2004, Vieques will be named a Superfund Site by the federal program responsible for overseeing the worst toxic waste dumps in the world. "Though more than $180 million has been reportedly contracted and more than 38,000 munitions removed, projections for completion have shifted from 2020 to 2022 and 2029" (Stanchich, 2013).
