The research at the Walter E. Fernald State School focuses on how cereals are metabolized. Parents of children with mental disabilities are asked to let their children join a "science club" with "special" privileges. The parents are not informed that they will be participants in research on cereals, which will include eating cereals that have been exposed to radiation. Quaker Oats will later be sued as a result of these "experiments," which will go on until 1953.
