Colonial laws that are aimed at preventing epidemics by limiting the movement of infectious individuals or goods are passed. The legislation also empowers local selectmen to isolate anyone with the plague, smallpox, or other "pestilential or malignant fever[s]." It authorizes the public care of (white) people who have fallen ill, providing housing, nurses, and other necessities.
