This group believes that "native-born" Americans (meaning white/Anglo-Americans) are superior to the newly-arrived immigrant groups. They base this on the fact that Irish and German immigrants tend to be poorer and some are Catholic, which the Know Nothings interpret as traits of cultural and economic backwardness.
