To filter by a particular topic and see a smaller section of the data, make a selection on the dropdown “Filters” menu or click “Search” to do a keyword search. Hover over the abbreviated filter tags in the blue boxes to see the complete name of the filter, or click a filter to display all the data with this tag. New York State passes legislation named after the state's governor, Nelson Rockefeller, that creates mandatory minimum sentences of 15 years to life for possession of four ounces of narcotics–about the same as a sentence for second-degree murder.

These laws spark a flurry of states competing to impose the harshest punishments, largely targeting Communities of Color in cities.
