This series of codes is aimed at further controlling enslaved Africans. The codes begin to blur the distinction between African, Native, and interracially mixed children. They declare that all Black people, Native people, and mixed race people (excepting those who are now free) will remain forever as "absolute slaves." The codes also prohibit enslaved people from gathering without white supervision, learning to read and write, and growing their own food. Native community identity is erased into a solely enslaved identity for people who are mixed Native and Black.
