The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), an AIDS advocacy group, is formed in response to the disease's devastating impacts on the gay and lesbian community in New York.

The group holds demonstrations against pharmaceutical companies that are profiteering from AIDS-related drugs, as well as the lack of policies protecting AIDS patients from outrageous prescription prices.
