The American Association for Study and Prevention of Infant Mortality declares war on midwifery.
Date: 1915
At the time of the sixth annual meeting of the American Association for the Study and Prevention of Infant Mortality (AASPIM) in 1915, the infant mortality rate is at 99.9 deaths per 1,000. For the meeting's main speaker, Dr. Joseph DeLee, midwifery is a "relic of barbarism."
At time of the meeting, midwives respond to 40% of births; twenty years later, to just 10%. However, these statistics likely only apply to white women and some women of color, as formal health care for Black and Indigenous women is still largely non-existent.
