The American Medical Association endorses a plan for expanding health insurance coverage.
Date: 1914
The plan would expand health insurance to thousands of low-income Americans. An American Medical Association (AMA) committee will go on to work with the American Association of Labor Legislation (AALL) from 1916-1917 to develop a proposal for insuring all members of the working class and their dependents. The proposal includes coverage for physicians, nurses, and hospitals, as well as provisions for sick pay, maternity benefits, and a funeral benefit, with cost-sharing between workers, employers, and the state.
The AMA will eventually deny it ever supported this proposal after disagreements occur about the method of paying physicians.
