The American Medical Association organizes against community-supported healthcare programs.
Date: 1920-1940
The American Medical Association (AMA) aims to keep control of the medical market in the hands of physicians within their network. In this era, the AMA is concerned that community-supported healthcare will either lead to the development of medical corporations that have decision-making power that excludes physicians, or make it easier for government officials to intervene in medicine.
Hospitals are pressured to stop hiring physicians and/or to revoke the licenses of those who are not affiliated with the AMA. These campaigns will successfully shutter many of these alternative plans and impact the healthcare market’s overall development.
