The California Supreme Court rules patients cannot profit from research conducted on their genetic materials.
Date: 1990
John L. Moore had a rare form of cancer. Blood and other genetic material drawn from his body was identified by the hospital as having high value for creating drugs that could be used to treat this form of cancer.
In Moore v. Regents of the University of California, Moore argues that he should receive a percentage of the profits from anything created using his donated samples. The court does not rule in his favor.
